Parkend St Pauls, Gloucestershire

Burgums of the "UU" family tree were baptised, married and buried here.

PARKEND ST PAULS was built on a piece of land donated by the Crown called "Mason's Tump" and completed in 1822. It took place under the direction of Henry Poole, who had been a curate at Newland. Henry had previously had experience in architecture in Bristol. It is extremely unusual, being octoganal and cruciform in shape. The north and south trancepts with porches, the sanctuary and the west end of the church form the arms. Beyond the west end is an embattled tower, the whole being designed in a gothic style. The church sits in a forest clearing just outside the small town. It was the third of the Forest Churches and Bishop Rider attended the Consecration.

(1) Henry Poole was curate at Newland, and also served at Coleford and Bream, but it was his appeal for public funds that resulted in the erection of a church and schoolroom at Parkend. He became Parkend St Pauls first vicar. He remained the incumbent there for nearly forty years. He also organised missions to other parts of the Forest of Dean, building school-chapels at Viney Hill, Oldcroft and Blakeney Woodside. He died 22nd December 1857, aged 72, and was buried at Parkend.

(2) John Joseph Ebsworth MA was educated at St Edmund College, Oxford. He had previously held the living at Temple Church, Bristolbefore becoming curate and then vicar at Parkend St Pauls. He died at the vicarage in Parkend in July 1896, aged 84, but he had become incapacitated due to feeble health, with his duties being discharged by his curate, Dr. John Bond.

(3) John Bond, Vicar, had served as curate to J.J. Ebsworth and became vicar in 1896. He died in 1900.

(4) D.J. Banham, had been curate at Bishops Cleeve, before accepting the living at Parkend, following the death of his predcessor.
