EAST STONEHOUSE ST GEORGES is a parish church in Plymouth, Devon. It was built by subscription in 1789 on the site of an ancient chapel. It was of an old plain stone fabric and a tower. The church was said to have 1000 sittings in 1842, but this was reduced to 700 sittings in 1850, possibly by better seating.. It was just a few years after the Royal Marine Barracks had opened.
Another church was built nearby in 1831 (St Paul's). Methodists, Baptists,Independents, Calvinists and Roman Catholics also had places of worship in the area. St George's was destroyed in 1941 when the area was heavily bombed. Unfortunately the bombings also devastated the graveyard. Some of the graves were later relocated to Efford Cemetery. |
