| NEWNHAM ST PETER. There was a church in the site in the 12th century and fragments from it were used were reused for the next building here. Records show a priest here at Newnham in 1166. It began as a chapelry to Westbury church and claimed as such by the Rector of Westbury. Arguements continued but, in 1309, the king again presented a clerk to Newnham church in a suit against the patron of Westbury declared that Newnham was a mother church to itself. Two years later the bishop instituted the king's presentee, as were his successors were presented and instituted as rectors. However Westbury did not abandon its claim until 1344. For much of the time from the 14th century until the 19th century a single parish priest covered both Newnahm St Peter and Littledean St Bartholomew. The church was called St Peter and stood on the Nab by river's shoreline. However the area was prone to erosion and flooding and in the 14th century was replaced near the top of the town on a hill. The church was largely rebuilt in 1875, consisting of a nave, chancel, south aisle and a tower with a short spire. A fire, in 1881, largely destroyed the church, with only the tower surviving. There followed another rebuild later that year largely following the plan of the 1875 construction. |
