RAWMARSH ST MARYS CHURCH is near Rotherham, in Yorkshire. The church is dedicated to St Mary the Virgin and sits on the top of Rawmarsh Hill. A church stood here in Norman times, but the current church was built in 1838 when the tower was made higher and rest of the church largely rebuilt. The tower, however, began to collapse in 1869 and was rebuilt to include the features of the existing Norman doorway. it was built of stone, which was largely blackened by the heavy indistries of the area.1894 saw the enlargement of the sanctuary and a north porch, vestry and organ chamber were added. More restoration took place in 2003. At the rear of Rawmarsh St Marys Church is the Rawmarsh High Street Cemetery. It is no longer in use, but is seperate from the much smaller churchyard. It is now a nature conservation area maintained by the cemeteries section of the Department of Engineering. Guided walks take place throughout the year. The Burgum (and Burgin) families who lived in the area were drawn by the large coal and steel industries in the area. The last collery closed in 1978. Nearby Parkgate was dominated by the Parkgate Iron and Steel Works where several Burgums worked. |
