Parkend, Gloucestershire

Several generations of Burgums and Burguhams lived at, or near, Parkend in the Forest of Dean. These included my mother and father (Jo and John Burgum), who lived at Woodland Avenue following my father's retirement. (Also see Palmers Flat and Fetter Hill near Parkend).

PARKEND is a hamlet in the district of St. Paul, Forest of Dean, and township of West Dean, 7 miles from Lydney station on the South Wales Railway, 4 from Coleford, 14 from Ross, and 16 from Chepstow, in the Western division of the county, hundred of Saint Briavels, Monmouth county court district, archdeaconry of Gloucester, rural deanery of the Forest, and diocese of Gloucester and Bristol. The district church of St. Paul, consecrated in 1822, is a handsome octagonal building of stone, having a tower with 1 bell, organ, and gallery. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £150, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Gloucester and Bristol, and held by the Rev. John Joseph Ebsworth, M. A. of St. Edmund Hall, Oxford. There is a mixed school for boys and girls, with residence, supported by an annual grant from the office of Woods and Forests, and by voluntary contributions. There are chapels for Baptists and Wesleyans. A cemetery was consecrated here in 1862. Here are extensive iron, tin and coal works. The soil is of the most part of a still clayey nature. and ironworkers who worked in the area. Abenhall had a poulation of 228 in the 1861 census and 307 in the 1871 census.
