WOOLASTON ST ANDREW'S CHURCH, is just south of Lydney along the A48 towards Chepstow. The church is mentioned in a record dated 1131. However, the old circular churchyard suggests a Saxon church, while and the nearby Roman road, which ran just to the north-west of the church, suggests an evan earlier holy site. The church tower on the north side of the nave was originally lower, with a short wooden steeple, but following the granting of a faculty in 1774, it was completely rebuilt. It was again rebuilt in the early 19th century and embattled in 1840. The large west porch was rebuilt in 1859 when the church was lovingly restored. It has a nave, a chancel, south aisle and organ chamber. The vestry was added in 1903. The church was threatened with closure in 2007 but at the final Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve it was announced the Church will be saved. |
