The 1841 Census took place on 6th/7th June 1841 and was the first census in England and Wales to contain the names of everyone in a household.
The ages of individuals up to the age of 15 were generally recorded correctly. Those over 15 years old were normally rounded down,
but not always. A teenager aged between 15 and 19 might have his age registered as 15 years old, while someone aged between 20 and 24 would
be recorded as 20 years old. The year of birth, therefore, is not necessarily accurate! Having said that, some enumerators did write down the
exact age. The head of the household was given a form to fill in to record the details of everyone who was staying there on that
particular night. Often, if the head of household could not read or write, the enumerator would fill in the details for them.
The questions asked on the form were - the place of residence and whether the house was inhabited, the names of every person who had stayed
there the previous night (including visitors), the age and sex of each individual and their profession (or whether they were of independent
means). Also "Where Born" usually indicated Yes or No to show if you are from this particular county. People from Scotland, Ireland
or "Foreign Part" were recorded as "S", "I" or "F".

About the 1890 Census
The 1890 Census took place on 30th March 1851. The questions and details given were significantly improved compared to the 1841 census.
The location details were more detailed, giving the name of the street, place, or road, together with the house name or number. The
relationship to the head of household was given, the individuals' marital status and their place of birth. It was noted if someone was blind
or deaf-and-dumb. More details were given about a tradesman (master, apprentice, etc) and the number of employees of a master was also given.
It was permitted to include night workers who were not at home that night. The rounding down of peoples ages was stopped.

About the 1890 Register
 |
While effectively a census, the 1939 Register was created for different reasons. With war looming in December 1938 the House of Commons announced that, should war break out, preparations would be made to create a National Register containin the personal details of every civilian in Great Britain and Northern Ireland. The Register was used to issue identity cards, organise rationing and much more.
Germany invaded Poland on 1st September 1939 with Britain declaring war two days later. On 5th September the National Registration Act was given royal assent and registration tool place on 29th September 1939. |
Forms were issued to over 41 million people and enumerators visited every household in Great Britain and Northern Ireland to collect the information. This included names, addresses, martial statuses, date of birth, occupation and other details of every civilian in the country. Identity cards were issued on the spot. There was a legal requirement to carry your identity card at all times and this remained law until 1952. If you did not have your card, you were required to present it at a police station within 48 hours. It was an essential tool to be able to identify everyone and track their whereabouts with bombs raining down on the country and children evacuated to safer locations.
The 1939 Register was later used in the founding of the NHS. The 1931 census was destroyed during an air raid on London and, because of the war, no census was taken in 1941. This is, therefore the only comprehesive record of the population of England and Wales between 1921-1951. |
