WHITCHURCH ST CANDIDA AND HOLY CROSS CHURCH, is in Dorset. A Saxon church once stood here, founded in the 9th century by Alfred the Great. Nothing of it remains today. The earlist parts of the existing church date back to the 12th century when it was rebuilt by Benedictine monks. The church does have some Norman architectural features but is largely Early English and Perpendicular in style.
More building work occured in the 13th century when the nave, the north and south transept and the south wall of the chancel were added. The shrine containing the remains of St Wite were added at this time. However it was not until the early 15th century that the grand tower, a prominent local landmark, was built. The porch and parapit of the south aisle were also added at this time.
The church is dedicated to St Candida (the Latin form of St Wite) and her relics are contained within the church. It is the only parish church in the whole country to have a shrine containing the relics of a saint.
