ABERDARE ST JOHN THE BAPTIST CHURCH was originally built as a Chapel of Ease for the monks from Margam Abbey in 1189 and of the original building survives. A new vestry was added in 1795. In the first half of the 1800's when Aberdare had a population of 13,000, the church housed only 250 and condition of the church was said to be cold and dark.. The burial ground was full by 1853 and suffered from poor drainage. IN 1871 it was said the windows were "falling in" and the roof was in disrepair. Finally in 1876 the church was reopened following a restoration costing £900.
Among other places of worship in Aberdare were St Elvan's Church and St Mair's Church.
