ISLINGTON AND ST PANCRAS CEMETERIES, in East Finchley, North London, are adjacent and now effectively merged and has the greatest number of interments of any cemetery in the UK. It is estimated that there have been 888,000 burials and 56,000 cremations recorded since since they were opened in 1854. It was the first Burial Board cemetery in London following the Metropolitan Burial Act of 1852. The joint sites consisted of 88 acres of land.
The layout and associated buildings were designed by Barnett and Birch, architects, and a nurseryman named William Masters. The cemeteries were originally separated by fencing, with the Islington chapel being built in 1896. The two parts of the cemetery remain separately managed and are under the ownership of the London Boroughs of Camden (St Pancras Cemetery) and Islington (Islington Cemetery).
