Several generations of Burgums of the "FF"family tree lived at Linton, or near by Aston Ingham.


LINTON ST MARY , is mentioned in the Doomsday Book. The current structure has a lovely spired tower and although partly Norman, most of the buildings current structure dates from the 13th and 14th centuries. There was a major restoration in 1875-76 carried out by Rev Edward Palin. The Patron of the church was St John's College, Oxford.

(2) Rev. Arthur Matthews was instituted at Linton St Mary in 1812. The net value of the living was £479 in 1831. "His premature decease, occasioned by the injuries he received from jumping imprudently from a stage coach, the horse drawing which had become restive, was deeply regretted by an extensive circle of friends, by whom his high intellectual endowments were duly appreciated. He was author of many poetical effusions, and took an active part in public matters, not only in Herefordshire, but in his University." (Collections Towards the History and Antiquities of the County of Hereford).

(4) Rev. Thomas Chandler Curties was vicar of Linton until June of 1865, when he died following a long illness. The living had included 68 acres of glebe (land providing income for a cleryman) and an annual salary of £675.

(5) Edward Palin (1825-, was born in Islington of humble beginnings, but went on to attend St Johns College, Oxford, gaining First Class Honours, an MA and then a Batchelor of Divinity. He remained at at St Johns College for 22 years. While on a walking holiday in Switzerland he met a young woman named Brita Gallagher and her American guarian Caroline Watson. Sometime later Brita and Caroline visited Edward at Oxford. At the age of 40, following the death of Rev. Thomas C. Curties, Edward gave up his comfortable college life and moved to Linton. The vicarage had been condemned and a new one was built in its place. Eighteen months after Edward Palin's appointment as vicar of Linton, he married Brita Gallagher in Paris in 1867. He was 42, while she was just 23 years old. Together they had 3 sons and 4 daughters. Amongst his achievements was the construction of new church school and considerable renovations to the dilapidated church. He also arranged for a hyraulic pump to be installed providing the vicarage with water. In addition he arranged for a tap and fountain to be supplied to the village for public consumption. He died in November 1903, age 77. Rev. Edward Palin, Brita Gallagher Palin, and her guardian Caroline Watson are all buried in the churchyard. Michael Palin of Monty Python fame is Edward's great grandson.

(6) Rev. R.W. Bennett was rector of Linton fron 1917 to 1929. He was described as "an experienced and active clergyman.
