ST ANNE´S CHURCH, SOHO in Westminster was consecrated on 21 March 1686. Construction began in 1677, in what was then countryside. It was a basilican style church with a 70 foot west end tower. Only completed in 1718 with a wooden spire, the tower became unstable and had to be demolished in 1800. It was replaced the next year with a new brick tower, a Portland stone bell chamber above that and then a copper cupola on top, completed in 1803.
The ashes of author Dorothy L. Sayers (she created the amateur detective Lord Peter Wimsey) is interred in a room beneath the tower.
In 1940, during the Blitz, the church was destroyed by fire, with just the derelict tower still standing. Most of the ruins were demolished although the tower was used as a chapel for a short time in the 1950's. In 1979 the Soho Society restored the tower and then, in 1990, the tower was restored again when a new church was built on the site. It was opened by Princess Anne in 1991.
Nowadays parts of the churchyard around the tower and the west end are now a public park (St Anne´s Gardens) off of Wardour Street. These gardens have a different access to the church, which is itself accessed through a gate off of Dean Street.
