Woodham Ferrers St Mary the Virgin, Essex
Burgums and Burghams lived here, or nearby.
WOODHAM FERRERS ST MARYS lies in a village near Chelmsford, in Essex. The church was built in the 13th and 14th centuries and restored with flint, brick and ashlar dressings. It has a slate and plain tiled roof. It consists of a nave and nave aisles built in 1260 AD and the chancel was rebuilt around 1290. The north and south asiles were again re-built in the early 1300's. The timbered south porch was built in the 1400's and later in the same century a West Tower.
Unfortunately the tower collapsed in 1703 and was replaced by another in 1715. Repairs in the 19th century did not include the tower, which no longer exists, while the south asile was largely rebuilt. The north vestry was also added at that time.
