John Burgum (1826-1907)
John Burgum was born in Birmingham, England, on 14th May 1826. John emigrated to America in 1850, entering at Boston. He found a job at a Boston factory that same day and was then recruited to work for the Abbot-Downing Factory, in Concord, and became their chief ornamental painter for the famous Concord stagecoaches. It was in Concord that he was invited to the house of Sarah Thompson, Countess Rumford. There he met
Emma Gannall. They were married a year later on 30th October 1852, much to the disapproval of the Countess who felt he might be after their money. John Burgum died on 16th April 1907. Three days later he was buried at Blossom Hill Cemetery. John and Emma had been married for fifty-five years. Maybe the Countess was wrong about John Burgum.

Emma Gannell Burgum (1826-1923)
Mary Grove worked for the Countess Rumford in Brompton Row, London, and married a silversmith named Henry Gannell. Their first child

In 1835, when Emma was nine, the Countess returned to America. However America had changed and many of her friends had passed away. The Countess opened up the old house in Concord, New Hampshire, but within three years the house was closed up again.
Sarah returned to Paris, taking Emma with her. The Countess remained restless and eventually returned again to Concord, NH. In 1851 she invited John Burgum, now a succesful ornamental artist, to the Rolfe-Rumford house in Concord to view several painings. It was there he met Emma Gannell. The rest, as they say, is history.
