Aston Ingham St John, Herefordshire

Several generations of Burgums of the "FF" family tree, lived at Aston Ingham, north of the Forest of Dean.

ASTON INGHAM ST JOHN (picture below) is dedicated to St John the Baptist and has a plain stone edifice, with nave, chancel, porch, and tower. A lead font at the church is dated 1689. Parts of the building retain links with its 12th and 13th century origins.The church was extensively rebuilt in 1891.

(1) Charles Whatley was born at Cirencester 20th December 1757. He was appointed to the living as rector in 1785. He also served at a Justice of the Peace. He died at Aston Ingham in 1835.

(2) Rev. Henry L. Whatley was born to Charles Whatley and Margaretta (Lawson) Whatley at Aston Ingham on 13th July 1801. He attended Worcester College, Oxford and then Wells Theological College. In 1868 the National Gazetteer stated the living was a rectory in the diocese of Hereford, value £350, in the patronage of the Rev. H.L. Whatley, incumbant. He also served as a magistrate. He died at Aston Ingham in 1873.

(3) Rev. Henry L. Whatley was born to Henry Lawson Whatley and Anne (Higgns) Whatley at Aston Ingham 1837. He died at Aston Ingham on 3 September 1914.

(4) Rev. Charles Lawson Whatley was born to Henry Lawson Whatley and Isabella Whatley at Peopleton, Worcestershire on 4th May 1868. He was educated at Pembroke College, Oxford and ordained deacon in 1891. He served as curate of Blockley (until 1894), Hardington (1894/5) and Madrefield (1895-97). Charles entered the Royal Navy as a chaplain and served on various ships until 1908, when he left the service, becoming vicar of Gorsley and Cliffords Mesne until 1910. He was rector of Aston Ingham from 1914, following the death of his father, where he served until 1945 He had a very strong link with his parish and devoted himself to the well-being of his parishioners. There were only four rectors in the 160 from 1785 to 1945, all of the Lawson Whatleys. The last Whatley had the living until 1964.
