CHRIST CHURCH, CREWE, is in Cheshire. It was built in 1843 for the Grand Junction Railway and was consecrated in December 1845. Aisles were added to the nave in 1864 and the tower, built of yellow sandstone, was added in 1877. The top stage contains louvred triple-lancet bell openings while, on the summit of the tower, is a stepped parapet with octagonal pinnacles at the corners.
The chancel was built in 1898, followed by a chapel in 1906. The nave was demolished in the 1970's due to problems with dry rot, while the tower and baptistry were declared redundant in June 1980. Remarkably services continued in the rest of the building until November 2013 when it was finally closed.
The tower of Christ Church still stands and is a Grade II listed building. |
