Birmingham Cemeteries, England

Burgums lived here, or nearby.

WARSTONE LANE CEMETERY in Birmingham, England, dates from 1847, but it was closed to new burials in 1982. It was also known by thw alternate names of Brookfields Cemetery, Church of England Cemetery or the Mint Cemetery. It has an impressive two-tier catacombs, which initially were not sealed with pitch or lead, leading to some very unhealthy smells! This led to the Birmingham Cemeteries Act of 1846.

Key Hill Cemetery autumn MF

KEY HILL CEMETERY in Birmingham, England was originally called Birmingham General Cemetery. It is sited in Hockley, which is also known as the Jewellery Quarter, in Birmingham. It was opened as a non-conformist cemetery in 1836 and is the oldest cemetery (as opposed as a churchyard) in Birmingham. There are two entrances in Icknield Street (west side) and Key Hill (northside). The entrance gates with their imposing piers and railings are Grade II listed. The Greek Doric chapel has, sadly, been demolished.

Witton Cemetery Birmingham chapel

WITTON CEMETERY was opened in 1863 and was then known as Birmingham City Cemetery. It is located 3.5 miles north-east of Warstone Lane and Key Hill Cemeteries. With an area of 103 acres it is the largest in Birmingham. Originally it had three chapels, but two were demolished in 1980. The cemetery was declared "full to capacity" in December 2013 and now only allows burials in existing family plots However it continues to accept cremated remains and babies for burial. Other burials now take place at the nearby New Hall Cemetery.
