DYMOCK ST MARY'S in the county of Gloucestershire. The original church was probably Saxon, although much of the existing building is Norman. It has a long nave and a chancel, a west bay and a west tower with a short octagonal spire that was added in the late 14th century or early 15th century. It is likely that the south porch is 13th century, while the doorway is certainly 14th century.
Dymock is famous for the ‘Dymock Poets’ who lived here between 1911 and 1914, leading up to the First World war. They included Rupert Brooke, John Drinkwater, Robert Frost, Wilfrid Gibson, Lascelles Abercrombie and Edward Thomas. The group broke up following the death of Edward Thomas who was killed by a shell blast on the Western front in 1917 at Arras in France. Robert Frost was probably the most successful of the poets, returning to America in February 1915. He received four Pulitzer Prizes, was honored twice by the Senate, and was invited to recite his poem "The Gift Outright" during the presidential inauguration of John F. Kennedy.
