YORKLEY BIBLE CHRISTIAN CHAPEL. It was around 1823 that the fundamentalist Bible Christian and Primitive Methodist sects began their work in the Forest of Dean. Rev. James Moxley, minister at the time, saw in Henry Jones a man fit to replace him. Henry was given charge of a class at Bream, worked the Circuit Plan and began pushing for the chapel at Yorkley Slade. The chapel at Yorkley Slade was opened on 3rd April 1862. The chapel became part of the Methodist Church in 1932 and a large classroom was added to it in 1955. It closed in 1992. Henry aand his wife Joanna had two sons, both of whom became ministers in the Primitive Methodist Ministry. Henry Jones became known as the Bishop of Yorkley Slade.
The Bible Chistians opened their first chapel called Bethel at Drybrook, opened in 1837. Bible Christian societies established memberships at EDges Hills, High Beech and Soudley. The Soudley meetings grew and a small chapel was built there on Bradley Hill, near Upper Soudley. It was a square stone building and was called the Zion Chapel (picture above). In 1851 the Zion Chapel had about 60 people attending at morning and evening congregations, while the Sunaday school had about 30 children attending. A schoolroom was added to the chapel in 1914.
The chapel was closed in 1988 and it became part of the Dean Heritage Centre. I had the priviledge of raising money for the Zion Chapel, first as a Trustee and then as Chairman of the Dean Heritage Museum Trust. Well-known authors attended a Literary Evening there and the BURGUM 2000 family history reunion attended a special service in the chapel. An oil painting by Michael Rhys Jenkins was commissioned by me and a limited edition set of prints were put on sale. The money made by the events, the prints and the oil painting all went to pay for much need repairs to the chapel.
