SHOREDITCH ST LEONARD'S, is in the London Borough of Hackney. The original cburch was probably saxon, although the first the first record of a church here is in the 12th century.
The church was close to England's first ever purpose-built playhouse, "The Theatre" constructed in 1576 and also near "The Curtain Theatre" built the next year. Several famous men were buried here including James Babage (founder of The Theatre), Richard Babage (leading man in many Shakespearian plays) and Gabriel Spenser (killed in a duel by Ben Johnson).
After part of of the church tower collapsed in 1716, the medieval church was rebuilt in Palladian style between 1736 and 1740, which included a 192 foot high steeple. It was fronted (picture left) with a huge four-columned portico. It was the first church in London to have gaslight in 1817. |
