MANGOTSFIELD ST JAMES CHURCH was built by William, Sheriff of Gloucestershire between the years 1222 and 1228 during the reign of Henry III. The church was closed in 1811 having fallen into disrepair. Many of the beams were rotten and it may well be that subsidence caused by the local coal mines made the situation even worse. Extensive reconstruction took place in 1851, which included the removal of the west porch revealing an earlier doorway. Two statues above the door were also revealed and proved to be well=preserved. A new spire was also added.
The village inself sits on the edge of the City of Bristol. A manor house associated with the church was demolished in 1846 to enable the expansion of the churchyard. The village lost its rural feel over time. A railway station served the village from the 1840's until it was finally closed in 1966.
