| GOODRICH ST GILES CHURCH contains a tomb just to the left side of the altar, which has no effigy or inscription. However, we know this is for the Countess of Salisbury who was given the task by Henry Bolingbroke of bringing up his son following the death of his wife, Mary de Bohun. That son was to later become King Henry V. As a boy, Henry was brought up at nearby Courtfield at Welsh Bicknor. The first known reference to the church was in 1196 when Godric, Bishop Godric Winchcomb, owned the village. The existing building was built in the mid-thirteenth century with a nave, north aisle and chancel. In the late 13th, eary 14th century, the nave was increased in length and a two bay chapel was added to the chancel. The unbuttressed slim west tower and south porch were also added at about that time. The tower has a tall octagonal spire, which was restored in 1884 and 2001. Thomas Swift (1595-1658) was vicar of Goodrich from 1624 until 1658 and was a Royalist during the English Civil War. He hid many of the church valuables from the Roundheads during the war. He was also grandfather to Jonathan Swift, who famously wrote Gulliver's Travels. A kitchen table and chest belonging to the Rev. Thomas Swift stand in the north aisle of the church. |
