Maldon St Mary the Virgin Church, Essex
Burgums lived here, or nearby.
MALDON ST MARY THE VIRGIN CHURCH stands close to the Blackwater estuary. It dates back to the year 1130 and originally stood on the site of an Saxon church. Most of the church dates from the 13th century. The top half of the 14th century tower collapsed in 1605 and was rebuilt in brick in 1636. The white shingled spire was added in 1740 to assist mariners returning to the port at Hythe. Changes were made during the Victorian restoration of 1886 when a new chancel and north asile were added.
The new building, on the right of the picture, is a new meeting place known as the Octagon.
There are two other churches in the town. All Saints Church is unique for having a triangular tower and the Church of the Blessed St Peters, where only the tower still stands.
