Mary Elizabeth Burgham was born in Jarrow, Durham, UK, in 1873. Her father William Burgham (born Henry Burgum) had left Staffordshire by 1861 and migrated to Durham, where the iron industry was developing. He was a puddler of iron. Mary married a soldier, James Cruickshanks Hall in 1898, in Newcastle. They had one boy (my GF) and six girls. They moved to Newcastle upon Tyne before WW1 and lived in very poor circumstances.
Widowed in 1926, Mary learned to play and teach the piano and was very much the Matriarch of the Hall family until her death in 1955. The photo is on the steps of her house in Walker, Newcastle upon Tyne, circa 1950. She is at the front with 2 of her daughters, Dora and Edith, and grandchildren Raymond, Kenneth and Dorothy behind, all now deceased.
