Llanfihangel Llantarnam, Monmouthshire
Burgums lived here, or nearby.
LLANFIHANGEL LLANTARNAM ST MICHAEL CHURCH was built in the early 12th century, apparently on the site of an earlier building. Major alterations and reconstruction took place in the 15th century. Larger windows were installed, the east wing was renovated and a north chapel built. The Tudor style tower was built in two stages with local stone, while stone arches and chancel arcade appear to have been built later, probably early 16th century.
The church register dates from 1727 records that the church was a vicarage with "net yearly value £108, with 21 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Bishop of Llandaff". Two years of renovations took place in 1869 and a six acre cemetery was added in 1892 at a cost of £3100. A furthur renovation took place in 1921, which included the removal of all the plaster work, reveiling several mediaeval murals.
