Doug Burgum
I have been researching the Burgum (and Burgham) family history since 1980.
If you have any pictures you would like to put on the website, please send them to me with clear information about the picture. If people in
the picture are living, please make sure you have their permission before you send them. I hope you enjoy the pictures.
John Burgum (1929-2007)
John Burgum was born in Dee Street, Poplar, London E14 on 19th September 1929. This pictures shows my father in his army uniform, where he
worked as a staff driver in the late 1940's. The family settled in Hockley, in Essex, where he worked as a French Polisher, before going
into business as a builder. Later John and his family moved to Devon where he fulfilled his dream of owning a pub, the Shute Arms. John
then moved to Axminster, where he worked for Axminster Carpets. Finally John and his wife Jo moved to the Forest of Dean, fully aware that
this was where his ancestors were from. He was proud of those roots. John died not far from Mitcheldean in 2007.
My Father and Alzheimers
The "AA" family tree has its' roots firmly in the Forest of Dean, until some moved to Bristol and Bolton, then on to London and beyond.
Some of the Burgums settled in Brazil; their descendants live there to this day.
Rose (Toulson) Burgum (1907-1970)
My Grandfather Whit Burgum met Rose at the age of 20 "down the hop fields" in Kent. They were married on 25th December 1928 at All Saints
Church, Poplar. Rose was 21 while Whit was aged 24. They got the Five Bells and Bladebone public house from the brewery and ran a successful
business, with Rose controlling the purse-strings! They were bombed out in 1940 when a tree from the local churchyard opposite (Poplar Church)
was felled by a bomb, severely damaging the pub. They then moved to the Rathbone Arms, also in East London and lived there until 1949. Then
they moved down to Hockley, in Essex, where they purchased four and a half acres of land, keeping chickens and pigs.
Later they moved to Canewdon, in Essex, where they owned a small-holding with thirteen acres of orchards and a large field normally sown with
wheat or barly. They continued to keep Chickens and pigs. Rose died in Rochford Hospital in 1970 and is buried at St Nicholas Church,
Canewdon. Whit lived another thirty-five years and aged nearly one hundred and two lived on his own in a small house just yards from the
churchyard at Canewdon.
Whit Burgum
William Whittington Burgum (1903-2005) was my grandfather and, at nearly 102 years old, lived in his own house at Canewdon in Essex.

Whit Burgum and his sister May
William Whittington Burgum (1903-2005) was my grandfather. His sister Mabel Dorothy Burgum was born in 1910, the ninth of ten children.
She married William Rolston in 1931.

Eliza Burgum nee Wilde (1868-1947)
Eliza Burgum nee Wilde (1868-1947) with nine daughters and her son, Sydney. It's thought there were 12 or 13 children in total. The little
girl sitting next to Sydney is Emma (1909-1981) who married George Chamberlain in 1937. Next to her on the floor is Valentina who was born
in 1907. The baby is believed to be Ivy (born 1913). Another of the girls is called Maud. Eliza was fondly called Whitewings by the family.
Sydney is understand to have played football for Manchester City; the club later found him a job in Goole.

Harry Hubert Burgum (1884-1957)
Harry Hubert Burgum was born 29th July 1884, at Plaistow. The picture shows him dressed in his masonic regalia. His parents were Henry and
Charlotte (Butcher) Burgum (Henry's second marriage). Harry was half brother to Freerick James Burgum (my great-grandfather).
He married Blanche Banks and they had one daughter, Blanche Doreen Burgum. Harry died at Poole, in 1957.

Brazil Burgums
In the nineteenth century my Great-great-grandfather Henry Burgum (1844-1931) went to Brazil. He was an engineer and he, and two of his
brothers, helped install the drinking water and sanitation for cities such as Rio de Janeiro and Campos. Henry returned to England once the
project was complete, but John Burgum remained in Rio and was said to be the British Consol, although I have no proof of this.
The Burgum descendants of John Burgum still live in Rio, Sao Paulo and elsewhere in Brazil.
Here is a family photograph of the Brazilian Burgums - I believe this to be William Thomas Burgum (1897-????), John Burgum (1863-1917),
Frank Alfred Burgum (1891-1980), Helena Burgum (1900-1989), John Edward Burgum (1887-1973), wife Sarah Ann [Wood] Burgum (1864-1946),
Dorothy Burgum (1895-1937) and Alice Burgum (1889-1978).

Dr Israel Vieira Ferreira
Here are three pictures of Dr Israel Vieira Ferreira. The first was taken in Rio de Janeiro on 1st January 1896. The second was taken in
about 1911. The third also shows Israel; he was an engineer and Lieutenant Colonel in the Brazilian Army. He was the son of Dr Miguel
Vieira and Elizabeth Burgum (1856-1902). Elizabeth was the daughter of Henry and Hannah Burgum of Bristol, England, and an article link
will be attached to this page in due course.

Frederick Weight
Here is a picture of Frerick Weight (1828-1901). He married Charlotte Burgum, of the AA family tree in Bristol, England, in 1849. They both became Mormons and undertook a perilous journey across the Atlantic, then across America to find the Promised Land. Charlotte became very ill crossing the Atlantic and, and gave birth to a son in January 1852 in St Louis. She continued to suffer on the journey across the plains until they arrived in Salt Lake City. Frederick sought work, with a sick wife and a 6 month old baby. Charlotte died in October 1852, aged just 23 years old.
