DORE ABBEY, HEREFORDSHIRE is in the village of Abbey Dore, in Herefordshire's Golden Valley. It is a former Cistercian abbey founded in 1147 and the construction of the buildings in local sandstone began in about 1175 and continued through to 1257 under three seperate abbots. The church had a nave and crossing, two chapels, two trancepts and a presbytery. The church was was continually added to and dedicated to the Holy Trinity and Saint Mary, consecrated in 1282 by the Bishop of Hereford.
The abbey was dissolved in 1536 when Henry VIII split from Rome and was purchased by a local landowner named John Scudamore. Much of the building fell into disrepair and it was left to Scudamore's great-great grandson to restore it from 1630. A new tower was constructed and the internal walls of the church were painted with texts and pictures. The church was re-consecrated in March 1634. Further restoration took place over a ten year period from 1700 and again towards the end of the Victorian period.
