| UPTON ST LEONARDS´S CHURCH is near Gloucester and there has been a church here since at least 1147. The church has had three phases of construction - Norman, medieval and Victorian. The exterior of the south aisle appears to have a Norman archway for a door, but the aisle was constructed in 1835 so it likely to be a replica.
The north arcade is thought to be medieval (13th or 14th century) as are some of the walls of the nave, the tower and the chancel arch. Although the lower part of the tower was 14th century, the upper part is dated as 15th century. The four pinnacles on top of the tower were lengthened in the 18th century. Other works in the 1850's include the chancel built in the Early English style and a new porch was added to replace the demolished medieval one. The south chapel and vestry were added in 1889. |
