CILCAIN ST MARY is near Mold, in Flintshire, in the diocese of St Asaph. The church is medieval, although the earlist documentary record is of 1291. The south nave and a west tower were added in in the 15th century. The north nave was burnt down in 1532 and remained roofless until it was rebuilt in 1746. It is believed that the ornate timber roof in the south nave was added at this time.
Restoration work was carried out in between 1845 and 1846 and a more signifcant restoration was carried out in 1888/89. At this time the tower was given stepped buttresses for support and brickwork near the top of the tower was replaced with stone. The south porch was replaced and plaster was removed from the interior walls. Roof repairs were carried out from 1935 tp 1937.
