St Marys Church (geograph 2725867)
GATESHEAD ST MARY'S PARISH CHURCH , is mentioned in 1291 and it is thought some of the stones used from some earlier Roman building. Until 1825 it was the only Anglican church in Gateshead and was there considered the mother church.

The aisles are formed with light octagonal pillars supporting five arches on both sides, with the trancept opening into the aisles in a similar way. Though the body of the church is old, the tower and a portion of the nave to the west was rebuilt in 1740. Initially the entrance was by a south porch until a new west door was created. The chancel opens into the nave through a wide arch. The tower was strengthened and other improved occurred in 1910.

Over time the population decreased due to slum clearance, but the church continued on until 1979. A fire broke out in the church later that year destrying the stained glass windows and badly damaging the chancel. In 2004, with the help of a Heritage Lottery Fund grant the building was purchased by the council, restored and renamed the Gateshead Visitor Centre. Later it was renamed the St Mary's Heritage Centre.
