It was built, as the gift of the Earl of Godolphin, between 1751 and 1761. It replaced an earlier structure, which had been struck by lightning and burnt down. The design with its' tall bell tower was by Thomas Edwards of Greenwich and the interior, with its gallery and iron columns, was very similar to the church of St. Alfege at Greenwich, designed by Hawksmoor. In 1830 a porch of granite with pilasters was built and, in addition, a staircase leading up to the gallery. The interior has a very large brass chandelier with 24 branches, dated to 1762, given by the Earl of Godolphin at the time the church was built. |
