ST BOTOLPH'S ALDGATE lies in the City of London, although it lies outside the original city walls. It is named after Saint Botolph (or Botwulf) after a 7th century East Anglian saint. The existing building is a rebuild constructed between 1741 and 1744 built of brick, with lovely stone quoins and window casings. A attractive obelisk stone spire sits above the square tower.
The church has a nave and aisles and there are gallerys on three sides. The church was frequently bombed during the Second World War and so required considerable restoration. An unexplained fire of 1965, required further restoration and repairs.
Records indicate the church dates from 1115, although the foundation may well pre-date the Normans of 1066. The church was rebuilt in the 1500's and renovated in 1621. It was built of brick and stone and rendered in a Gothic style. The medieval church was untouched by the Great Fire of London of 1666.
Daniel Defoe, author of the novel Robinson Crusoe, was married in the church in 1683. Only the bible has been printed in more languages!
