ST ILAN CHURCH, EGLWYSILAN sits on a ridge between the Taff Valley and the Aber Valley. The location is less than 10 miles from the centre of Cardiff. The church was originally Roman Catholic, but became Anglican following the Reformation. The source of the 14th century dedication of the church to St Ilan is uncertain, although it was possibly named for a monk St Ilan. It is thought the church was built on the site of an earlier Celtic chapel dating possibly from the 6th century.
The current church was built in 1200AD and has a nave and chancel, a south porch and a west tower with battlement small crocketed pinnacles. The north wall of the church has a sandstone slab carved with the figure of a warrior. This is believed to been date from the 8th-10th century.
Just two and a half miles away is Senghenydd, site of the Universal Colliery. It was here in 1913 that the biggest mining disaster in history took place. It claimed the lives of 440 in the 'Senghenydd Explosion'. An earlier explosion in 1901 had claimed the lives of 78 coal miners.
