| Gunns Mill was a charcoal blast furnace built in 1625. It is the oldest blast furnace in the country. Although it is a ruin English Heritage state that it is of national and European signifcance. Indeed it is possibly one of the most complete early blast furnaces in the whole world! It is a scheduled monument and a Grade II* listed building. It was originally built by Sir John Wintour and was expanded in about 1683. The building lies in the beautiful Flaxley valley and was functioning when my Burgum family were living in the locality. In 1740 it was converted into a paper mill. Towards the end of the 19th century it was being used as a farm building. Despite all these changes during its' long history Gunns Mill still retains the original blast furnace together with its' blowing chamber and charging house. |
