The Dean Forest Railway refers to a heritage railway experience that runs between Lydney and Parkend in the Forest of Dean. It is 4 1/4 miles long (6.8km). The route is a section of the original Severn and Wye Railway which used to run from Lydney to Cinderford. The Society that runs the line and trains began in 1971 with a steam locomotive. It now runs steam and heritage diesel locomotives along its tracks, giving much pleasure to its visitors.
At my last count the Society had 10 steam trains and 16 diesel and electric trains. It also has visiting "guest" trains occasionally. There are plans to extend its track a further 2 1/2 miles through the Dean Forest to Speech House Road and perhaps, one day, to Cinderford. Lets we shall wait and see what happens!
