| Blakeney in the Forest of Dean lies on the eastern side of the Forest on the A48 road between Westbury on Severn and Lydney. Further in each wach direction of the the towns of Glouceter to the north and Chepstow to the south. Two water courses meet at the village, namely Soudley Brook and Blackpool Brook. It was the site of a Roman Villa dated to about 75AD. A Roman road passed through Blakeney travelling south from Newnham whose purpose, as with all Roman roads, was constructed primarily for miliary purposes. In Roman times it was also possible to access the River severn to the east by boat. A furnace and an iron forge were in the village as early as 1228. There are several houses dating from the 1600's and 1700's. The church of All Saints, Blakeney was built in the 1800's. Blakeney was the nearest village to our house at Bradley Hill and, for a while, my children attended junior school here. |
