Drift is a term for any near-horizontal underground passage that follows a coal seam or joins seams of coal together. They are tunnels that can provide access for mining, the haulage of the coal, ventilation or simply exploration. They differ from adits, which usually lead to and from the surface, whereas a drift does not need to do so. Both terms are generally used in drift mining.
