| ROTHERHAM , is a large town in South Yorkshire, England, formerly in the West Riding of Yorkshire. It is sited where the River Don is crossed by the original main road between Sheffield and Doncaster. Other locations in Rotherham nearby include Rawmarsh, Wath upon Deaneand Greasbrough.
All Saints' Church, also known as Rotherham Minster is mostly built of sandstone dating from about the 15th century. Parts of an earlier Saxon and later Norman building can also be found. Its' most outstanding feature of a octagonal spire has been described as the best perpendicular style church in the country. A 15th century Chapel of the Lady of Rotherham Bridge, or simply the Chapel of the Bridge, was restored in 1923, having been used as a jail and a tobacconist shop. An abundance of coal and some iron resulted in a boom during the Industrial Revolution producing fine iron and steel. It produced cannon for the HMS Victory and numerous cast iron bridges. Numerous foundaries grew up and brass glass and pottery were also produced. One of the most successfull ironworks was Parkgate Ironworks, going through several owners between 1823 and 1974. |
